I'm sure I started out just like everyone else has with just those few chickens. I just wanted something small and cute. Something that would be more like a pet. I've always 0wned animals and loved them. So I started researching Silkie chickens. Silkies are a breed of a chicken that are as close to a pet as your are going to get.

As I was finding out they had all these little quirky characteristic's that i was falling in love with. It was small maybe 1-3 pounds which meant i could have a few. Silkies have plumage that's like silk and or fur. They are really soft and fluffy. And since they don't have feathers they can't fly. So they are easier to keep in your yard in a small area.

There are two types of Silkies, bearded and non bearded, I must say my favorites are the bearded and that is what I have. And I love all the colors of the Silkies. A lot of people show their Silkies they are such beautiful birds. These are the colors that are recognized for showing, black, blue, buff, grey, partridge, and white. I just had to have all of these. There are other colors or types out there we also have red, splash, and paint. And i will soon have chocolate. I can't wait.

Another sign of perfection or show quality they should have a small walnut shaped comb, and turquoise-blue earlobes. Silkies are also one of a very few breeds that have 5 toes. As so do the Faverolles, and the Sultan. Another trait is the Silkies have black or bluish skin/bones and their meat is also. And again Silkies really only come in one size which would be considered Bantam with the male being under 3 pounds and the female 2 pounds they are considered Standard chickens.

I'm so happy with my choice to pick Silkies as my first chicken's. I truly fell in love with them and they are the cutes little characters. As i've grown to love them ive learned so much about them and how they are. They really are my pets. I love them all...
